Description
As part of his visit to ANU, Dr Rob Salguero-Gómez (University of Oxford) will lead an interactive workshop designed specifically for PhD students and early-career researchers. In this session, Rob will draw on his extensive editorial experience to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the publication process. Currently a Senior Editor for the Journal of Animal Ecology, Rob has handled hundreds of manuscripts and guided dozens of authors through the peer-review process. He will share insights on what editors and reviewers look for in compelling submissions—from framing a paper’s novelty, to crafting a clear narrative, responding to reviewer comments, and avoiding common pitfalls.
This workshop will also explore how to tailor your manuscript to your target audience, select the right journal, and strengthen your paper’s contribution to ecological theory and practice. With practical tips and candid advice, participants will leave with a clearer sense of how to increase their chances of successful publication in leading journals.

Rob is a tenured Associate Professor of Ecology at the University of Oxford and the founder of the COMADRE Animal Matrix Database. His research has been published in Nature, Science, Ecology Letters, and Journal of Animal Ecology, among others. He has secured over £26 million in funding and has mentored multiple successful early-career researchers in ecology and evolution.
