Machine learning is becoming an increasingly useful tool for researchers with applications in the fields of genomics, phylogenetics and ecology. We interact with software that uses machine learning every day, from Facebook’s facial recognition to Spotify’s music recommendations.
The aim of this event is to introduce biologists to the field of machine learning and provide opportunities to build collaborations with machine learning experts.

Machine learning experts from ANU Computer Science and NICTA will be on hand to provide advice on how machine learning methods could be applied to your dataset.
We will have opportunities for researchers to present a 5 min presentation of their biological questions and data. If you are interested in classification of complex samples, feature extraction (from images or audio) and quantification, or identifying cryptic sub-groups in your data, we can help.

We will be showcasing successful examples of machine learning being used to solve problems in biology, including image processing, bioacoustics and sequence analysis.
