Bogong Moth Summit: uniting people, place and purpose for conservation

The Bogong Moth - Agrotis infusa | Bugung (Ngarigo) | Deberra (Taungurung) - is an iconic Australian species, important to First Nations Peoples, critical to ecosystems along its migratory path and the Australian alps, and threatened with extinction.

To secure the Bogong Moth's future we need to understand its distribution and migratory flyways, which is a major challenge because their distribution records span the full breadth of Australia, everywhere south of 25° latitude.

The primary aim of this CBA co-funded Synthesis workshop is to explore and highlight the ecological and cultural importance of the Bogong Moth and inspire involvement in their conservation.

Day One will be a showcase of diverse knowledge of the Bogong and examplars of insect conservation.

Day Two will be an invitation-only workshop that aims to determine barriers to diverse groups getting involved in the projects and how to overcome them.

We are also seeking interest in a Field Trip to see the Bogongs putting on their spectacular display at dusk on the top of Kunama Namadgi / Mt Kosciuszko over the weekend immediately after the Summit.

Schedule

Day 1 | Thu Feb 27 | Bogong Moth Summit ($110)

  • Discussion panels, short presentations and a mini workshop.
  • Evening Public Event - Bogong Moth viewing by light sheet. Free and open to all.

Day 2 | Fri Feb 28 | Bogong Moth Workshop (invitation only)

  • How to inspire broad participation in the Bogong Moth Observatory. A small group of people from a diverse range of industries, places, and experiences will workshop how we can grow a Bogong Moth community. This day is invitation only to keep the group small so discussions can be most effective.

Weekend | Mar 1-2 | Field Trip to Kunama Namagdi / Mt Kosciuszko

  • Overnight trip to Charlotte Pass to witness a sunset Bogong Moth maelstrom on Australia’s highest peak.
  • We are seeking expressions of interest at registration. Capacity will be limited and the trip will be strongly weather-dependent.
  • Accommodation at Charlotte Pass and return coach transfers to Canberra included (~$300 pp including transfers, accommodation, meals).
