Budding entomologists discover the hidden world of insects

Over 40 school students and their families visited ANU last sunday for the Discovering Insect Biodiversity workshop. Across two hands-on sessions, participants explored the diversity of Australia's insects using microscopes, learned how to identify different groups, and helped sort and photograph real research specimens collected for our Diversity Scanner projects.

The workshop gave visitors a unique opportunity to experience biodiversity science in action and learn why insects are so important for healthy ecosystems. Participants also gained an insight into how scientists document and study Australia's vast and largely unknown insect diversity.

The enthusiasm and curiosity shown throughout the day were a highlight for the team of ECR and HDR student presenters.

The event was delivered to help celebrate National Science Week and formed part of the Centre for Biodiversity Analysis and Australian Biodiversity Discovery Facility's ongoing commitment to engaging the community in biodiversity research and discovery.
