About
2025 joint Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia Workshop and Australian Academy of Science Fenner Conference on the Environment
Extreme heatwaves are landscape-scale shocks to our natural, agricultural and social systems that occur against the backdrop of rising mean temperatures. Their increasing severity is posing major societal challenges. With each passing season, high temperature records are being broken globally, with heatwaves now occurring across more than 10% of the Earth’s terrestrial surfaces (up from 1% in the 1960s). Australia is especially vulnerable to extreme heat challenges, with life-threatening heatwaves becoming more frequent and severe across the continent.
The 2025 joint Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia Workshop and Australian Academy of Science Fenner Conference on the Environment will explore current knowledge, highlight gaps, and shape future research collaborations both locally and internationally that seek to develop environmental, technical, and social solutions that will address the challenges of extreme heat. The conference brings together experts and their colleagues from research, industry, and policy who are focused on charting positive alternative futures for our landscapes and society.
