This week's discussion theme is theory and methods of biogeographic regionalisation. For consideration, I am posting two papers sent to me by Craig Moritz and Pete Cranston respectively:
- Rillig MC, Kiessling W, Borsch T, Gessler A, Greenwood AD, Hofer H, Joshi J, Schröder B, Thonicke K, Tockner K, Weisshuhn K, Jeltsch F. 2015. Biodiversity research: Data without theory – theory without data. Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution 3. This two-page opinion piece decries the mistmatch (in both directions) between theory and data in biogeography.
- Vilhena DA, Antonelli A. 2015. A network approach for identifying and delimiting biogeographical regions. Nat Commun 6. This paper, which admittedly exemplifies "data without theory" (of Rillig et al), presents a novel method with comparisons to the currently fashionable "turnover" approach.
Coopers and Cladistics is a long-running evolutionary biology discussion group held every second thursday at ANU. Please contact Mike Crisp if you would like to be included on the C&C email list.
