As we enter a new financial year, let's discuss an alternative method of accounting for the evolutionary clock.
Mike Lee and colleagues have published a few papers recently presenting their version of the morphological clock, using examples from the vertebrate fossil record.
I am suggesting we base the discussion on their recent paper in Science, which uses DINOSAURS as the example - and it cites their earlier papers:
Lee MSY, Cau A, Naish D, Dyke GJ. 2014. Sustained miniaturization and anatomical innovation in the dinosaurian ancestors of birds. Science 345(6196): 562-566.
You can also look at their methodological paper in Syst Biol, using birds as the example here.
Meet in the Graduate Lounge, University House, at 5:30 pm.
Coopers and Cladistics is a long-running evolutionary biology discussion group held every second Thursday at University House, ANU. Please contact Mike Crisp if you would like to be included on the C&C email list.
