Does collecting voucher specimens of rare species threaten them with extinction? Some claim that this is how the Great Auk was finished off.

Is the collection of vouchers essential to taxonomy or is it trophy hunting by competitive museum curators?

Would high quality digital images combined with DNA samples suffice as vouchers instead? Are images or DNA allowable as types under the nomenclatural codes?

Meet at 5:30 pm in University House, inside or in the garden, depending upon the weather.

Coopers and Cladistics is a long-running evolutionary biology discussion group held every second Thursday at University House, ANU. Please contact Mike Crisp if you would like to be included on the C&C email list.
